About Are We There Yet

Family days out, sorted.

Are We There Yet is the app that helps South African parents find places that genuinely welcome kids, and helps family friendly venues get discovered.

Why we built it

Saturday morning is decided in about four minutes. The children are bored, someone asks where are we going, and a parent picks from the same handful of places they can already remember. Meanwhile there is a farmyard twenty minutes away that nobody has heard of, and a splash park on the other side of town that would have made the whole day.

That gap is the entire reason Are We There Yet exists. Not a listings directory to scroll through on a laptop, but something you open on your phone when the question gets asked, that shows you what is actually near you, tells you whether it suits your children's ages, and then gives you directions to the front gate.

How it works

Every venue sits on one map, sorted into twelve categories, each with its own colour. Parents filter by activity type, amenities, indoor or outdoor, and free or paid. Tap a venue to see photos, opening hours, facilities and what other parents thought. Tap once more and your maps app opens, already pointed at the door.

The app installs straight from your browser. There is no app store queue, and it is deliberately small and light on data. That matters more here than it does elsewhere, because South African data is expensive.

How we work

A person reads every listing

Not a filter, a person. We aim to review new venue listings within 48 hours and we tell venues honestly whether they are approved, need a change, or are not a fit.

The Gold badge cannot be bought

It takes 4.7 or higher across at least ten genuine parent reviews. No plan buys it, including the most expensive one. Paying us never changes a rating or hides a review.

Paid placement is always labelled

Some venues pay to be seen more. Wherever that happens it is marked as sponsored, so you always know the difference between a recommendation and an advert.

Giving something back

We commit 10% of Are We There Yet subscription revenue to charity and community initiatives. One cause at a time, chosen each quarter, named on our website, with the running total published as it goes out. Four a year, each one named, so you can go and look at it.

Registered non-profits and community run venues are listed free. Not a trial, not a discount. That one is live today.

Who we are

We're the McNicols, a Cape Town family who know the weekend question all too well: what's happening this weekend, and where can we take our toddler?

Finding somewhere to go with a little one should be exciting, but too often it means endless searching, second-guessing, and wondering whether children are genuinely welcome, or simply tolerated. Is there space for them to play? Are there changing facilities, high chairs, or pram-friendly paths? Will they have fun? And, just as importantly, will Mum and Dad enjoy themselves too?

Are We There Yet? was created to take the guesswork out of family days out. We help South African parents discover activities, venues, and hidden gems that truly work for families, from places around the corner to destinations worth the road trip. Filter by what matters, find the details you need before you leave, and discover places where the whole family feels welcome.

Because family time should mean less scrolling, fewer disappointing outings, and more “That was such a great day.”
